Plants small, ca. 1 cm high, yellowish green to brownish, in dense tufts. Stems erect, simple or branched; central strand present. Leaves oblong-elliptic to ligulate, obtusely pointed or apiculate at the apex; lower margins entire, somewhat recurved, upper margins more or less plane, distantly denticulate, marginal cells of 4–5 rows, thick-walled, yellowish, forming a distinctly differentiated border; costa strong, percurrent; upper leaf cells quadrate to hexagonal, with multiple rounded or C-shaped papillae; basal cells rectangular, hyaline, forming a distinctly differentiated leaf base. Dioicous. Setae ca. 1 cm long; capsules erect, long-cylindrical; opercula obliquely long-rostrate.
