Tortula capillaris Dix. in Yang, Sci. Rep. Natl. Tsing Hua Univ., ser. B, Biol. Sci. 2: 118, nom. nud. Tortula capillaris (P.-C. Chen) Zand., Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 32: 223. 1993. Type.

Plants very small, only to ca. 1.5 mm high, green, in tufts. Stems ca. 1 mm long, simple, densely foliate. Leaves triangularly lanceolate, ca. 0.7 mm long, gradually acuminate at the apex; margins entire or crenulate, incurved; costa stout, percurrent to shortly excurrent (mucronate); upper leaf cells pentagonal to hexagonal, 8–9 µm wide, thin-walled, with rounded, circular or C-shaped papillae. Setae erect, ca. 5 mm long; capsules erect, elliptic-cylindric, ca. 1.1 mm long; peristomes linear, papillose, twisted slightly counterclockwise. Spores spherical, yellowish, ca. 25 µm in diameter, papillose.

China: Hebei (Chahar), Hsiao-wutai-schan, on soil, 2600 m, 1 IX 1935, C.-Y. Yang S88 (holotype PE).

Specimens examined: JILIN: Chang-bai Mt., C. Gao 63009 (HKAS, IFSBH). SICHUAN: Wen-chuan Co., J.-X. Luo 3928 (PE). XIZANG: Lin-zhi Co., Y.-G. Su 2552 (HKAS). YUNNAN: Gong-shan Co., M. Zang 140 (HKAS).

Habitat: on soil in shade in forests; Distribution: endemic to China.
