Didymodon gemmascens Broth. in Handel-Mazzetti, Symb. Sin. 4: 38. 1929, hom. illeg. Syntrichia gemmascens (P.-C. Chen) Zand., Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 32: 269. Desmatodon gemmascens var. hopeiensis P.-C. Chen, Hedwigia 80: 229, f. 72, 6–9. 1941, syn. nov. Type. China: Hebei (Hopei), Dong-ling (Tung-ling), L.-C. Yu 6 (holotype PE).

Plants small to medium-sized, rather thick, 7–15(–20) mm high, yellowish brown, in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple, rarely branched, densely radiculose at the base. Leaves oblong-obovate to oblong-elliptic, narrowed at the base, abruptly acute to apiculate at the apex; margins distinctly bordered by several rows of cells, entire in the lower half, serrulate above, rarely revolute; costa percurrent; upper cells rounded hexagonal, moderately thick-walled to thick-walled, with numerous irregular papillae. Gemmae abundant, occurring in leaf axils or on the surfaces of leaves, sometimes gemmae developed into young plants on the leaves or stems. Sporophytes not seen.

Type. China: Yunnan, De-qing Co., Doker-la, 3600–3700 m, Handel-Mazzetti 8029 (holotype H).
