Tortula eurphylla Zand., Bull. Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 32: 223. 1993 (superfluous, earlier name included). Tortula nankomontana Nog., J. Jap. Bot. 20: 257. 1947. Type. China: Taiwan, Tai-bei, Tai-ho-ku, Y. Nakamura 3808 (holotype NICH).

Plants very small, 4–9 mm high, yellowish green above, dull, brownish green below, in loose or dense tufts. Stems simple, radiculose below; central strand absent. Leaves slightly contorted when dry, erect to erect-spreading when moist, oblong-elliptic to oblong-ligulate, 1.1–2.0 mm x 0.5 mm, broadly acute, ending in a smooth, hyaline awn; margins somewhat revolute, somewhat to distinctly bordered, entire or nearly so; costa slender, excurrent in a long awn; upper cells rounded quadrate to rounded hexagonal, 16–30 µm × 16–22 µm, moderately thick-walled, with numerous circular or C-shaped papillae; basal cells rectangular, 30–70 µm × 20–24 µm, lax, smooth or papillose. Autoicous. Setae slender, 10–20 mm long, reddish brown; capsules erect, symmetric, oblong-cylindrical; peristome teeth straight, lanceolate, divided 2–3 times, papillose. Spores 16–24 µm in diameter, verrucose.

Habitat: on rocks, thin soil over rocks, or on soil in crevices of rocks; Distribution: China, India, Japan, the Russian Far East, central Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa.
