Astomiopsis sinensis Broth. in Handel-Mazzetti, Symb. Sin. 4: 12. 1929. Type. China: Yunnan, near Li-jiang (Li-chiang), Handel-Mazzetti 12976 (holotype H; isotype MO).

Plants small, 3–6 mm high, yellowish green, solitary to loosely gregarious. Leafy stems erect, simple, somewhat julaceous; central strand present. Leaves 0.4–0.7 mm × 0.2–0.3 mm, erect-appressed, oblong-ovate to oblong-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, broadly acute to shortly acuminate; margins entire below, faintly serrulate above; costa percurrent to shortly excurrent; median leaf cells irregularly rectangular, 15–25 µm × 7–10 µm, moderately thick-walled; basal leaf cells short-rectangular, 15–30 µm × 10–15 µm, firm walled. Perichaetial leaves 1.2–1.6 mm × 0.35–0.50 mm, oblong-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate; costa excurrent into a short smooth awn; margins entire below, smooth to faintly serrulate above; median and upper cells long-rhomboidal to irregularly vermicular, 40–55 µm × 5–8 µm, thick-walled; basal cells irregularly rectangular, 35–70 µm × 8–15 µm, firm walled. Cladautoicous. Capsules emergent to slightly exserted, tips of perichaetial leaves usually reaching base of urn or sometimes rarely beyond the base, erect, elliptic to elliptic-cylindric, 0.7–1.0 mm × 0.35–0.50 mm; annuli persistent, consisting of 2–3 rows of irregularly oval cells; opercula obliquely short-rostrate, 0.2–0.3 mm long. Spores 20–25 µm in diameter, papillose, brownish. Calyptrae cucullate.
