Plants small, 10–15 mm high, yellowish green, in compact tufts or cushions. Stems erect, simple and sparsely branched. Leaves up to 2.5 mm long, lanceolate, abruptly narrowed from an ovate to obovate, sheathing base to a flexuose-spreading to squarrose, subulate acumen; margins plane, entire or sometimes serrulate at the extreme apex; costa narrow, percurrent to shortly excurrent, usually smooth at back near the apex; upper cells about leaf shoulder rectangular, 15–25 µm × 7–9 µm, thin-walled; lower cells near leaf base becoming shorter. Dioicous or autoicous. Perichaetial leaves not much differentiated from the upper stem leaves. Setae straight, up to 10 mm long, reddish; capsules suberect to horizontal, long-obovoid, curved and asymmetric, often somewhat strumose and faintly plicate when dry; opercula stoutly long-rostrate, often curved; annuli absent; stomata few; peristome teeth divided only in the upper portions, less than halfway to the base, vertically striate and reddish below. Spores 13–16 µm in diameter, finely papillose.
