Plants soft, to 1.5 cm high, whitish green, in dense tufts. Stems erect, sparsely branched. Leaves in three obscure ranks, 3–4 mm long, erect to slightly reflexed from the middle leaf, sheathing at base, gradually narrowed to linear-lanceolate subula; costa thick and broad, reaching to the blunt leaf apex, filling almost the entire subula, strongly convex on the abaxial side, slightly concave on the adaxial side, papillose on both sides; basal leaf margins around shoulders often recurved; at shoulders hyaline laminal cells linear, chlorocysts forming cilia, in subula hyaline cells only 1–2 rows on each side of costa or filling the entire costa, superficial chlorocysts strongly conical-mammillate, spinulose projections often to 15–20 µm long, leaf appearing scabrous. Sporophytes not seen, reported to be the same as described under the genus.

Chinese specimens examined: HAINAN: Li-shui Co., Redfearn et al. 36221 (MO); Ling-shui Co., P.-J. Lin 2909 (IBSC). TAIWAN: Tai-pei Co., S.-H. Lin s.n. [Bryophytes of Taiwan Exsiccatae No. 215] (MO, as Exodictyon sullivantii); Huo-shao Dao (Is.), G. H. Schwabe 122 (NICH).

Habitat: on tree trunks, branches, or soil of exposed roots of living trees; Distribution: China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malay Peninsula, Singapore, the Philippines, New Caledonia, Australia, and Africa.
