Plants medium-sized, 1–2 cm high, dull green to reddish brown, in dense tufts. Stems erect, simple or branched; central strand present. Leaves narrowly ovate-lanceolate, gradually acute; margin entire in lower 2/3, recurved, irregularly dentate in upper 1/3; costa strong, percurrent or just ending 2–3 cells below the apex; upper leaf cells rounded hexagonal, moderately thick-walled, with rounded or C-shaped papillae; basal cells rectangular, smooth, hyaline, forming a distinct differentiated base. Sporophytes not seen.
