Usually climbing or straggling shrubs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire. Flowers small, tubular, each inserted on the midrib of each bract. Bracts 3, showy. Perianth tube 5-6-lobed. Stamens 7-8, connate at the base. Style lateral. Anthocarp fusiform, glabrous or pubescent, 5-ribbed.
A genus of c. 18 species, chiefly in tropical and temperate America; widely cultivated and sometimes naturalized. 2 species are commonly cultivated here, of which several varieties occur.
