Small shrubs; branches crowded, fastigiate. Leaves small, thick, imbricate and appressed to the stem, in 4 rows. Flowers solitary axillary or in small clusters, pentamerous. Corolla campanulate. Stamens 10, included, adherent at base of corolla; anthers opening by apical pores. Ovary 5-locular; style cylindric. Fruit capsular; dehiscence loculicidal. Seeds numerous, minute.
A genus of about 12 species, found in the sub-arctic and high Asiatic mountains.
