Lachnosiphonium Hochst.Xeromphis Rafin.
Large shrubs, often with straggling horizontal armed spines paired or unpaired branches. Stipules small, membranous, triangular, acuminate. Flowers bisexual, few or solitary arising from lateral ‘spurt’. Calyx lobes foliaceous. Ovary 2-locular. Placentas 2, attached to the septum of the ovary. Fruit crowned by the persistent calyx, with thick pericarp; endosperm not ruminate.
A small genus with 6 species, distributed in tropical east Asia, Central and South Africa and Madagascar. Represented in Pakistan by the following species. Often included under Randia. However, Randia is exclusively an American genus and characterized by its 2-locular ovary, with parietal placentas; seeds embedded in a non-waxy bluish pulp, unisexual flowers and the pollen are in tetrads.
