Plants arborescent, palm-like with tall stems. Leaves large, usually crowded at the top. Flowers sessile or with a short jointed pedicel, bracteate, perianth segments and stamens 6 in number. Ovary three-locular with many ovules in each loculus. Fruit a berry.
A genus of c. 15 species. Represented in Pakistan by one cultivated species.
