Roots thick, branched. Bulb plate ± protruding at the base. Bulb leaves imbricate. Raceme solitry. Bracts spurred, prophylls present. Tepals connate for 1/3, free part reflexed. Stamens epiphyllous, filaments broadened at base, inserted in the upper part of the tube, anthers small. Ovary ovoid, style long, 7-15 ovules per locule. Capsule ellipsoid, seeds compressed (Speta l.c.).

A genus with c. 10 species distributed in Southern and tropical Africa, one species extending to Pakistan and India.
