Small trees, usually spiny. Leaves simple; margins serrate to crenate. Flowers dioecious in short axillary or terminal clusters. Sepals 4-5. Petals lacking. Stamens indefinite. Ovary 2-5 locular, surrounded below by a disc; styles 2 or more, free or united at the base. Fruit a berry.
A genus of about 60 species found in tropical Africa and Asia.
