Annual. Leaf-blades flat. Inflorescence a ± condensed secund panicle. Spikelets dimorphic, slightly laterally compressed, falling in groups of 3-5. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, the second floret reduced to a rudiment; sterile spikelets several-flowered, 2-4 of them forming an involucre around each fertile spikelet; glumes thin, subequal, acute; lemma of fertile spikelets chartaceous, awned, that of the sterile spikelets membranous, awnless.
