Erect herbs or shrubs with viscid-pubescent parts. Leaves simple, entire. Flowers in terminal racemes, panicles or corymbs, bisexual, regular. Calyx shallowly 5-lobed, tubular, campanulate. Corolla salver-or infundibuliform, limb 5-lobed. Stamens 5, included. Anthers dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary bilocular; style simple; stigma capitate. Fruit a capsule, dehiscing initially by 2 valves. Seeds many, small.
60 species, mainly tropical America, S.W. Africa, and Australia. Represented in Pakistan by 3 species which are naturalised or cultivated.
