Small annuals. Leaf-blades flat or convolute when dry. Spikelets 1-flowered, placed broadside to the rhachis, glumes 2, lanceolate to ovate, 3-5-nerved, sharply inflexed near their outer margin and with an asymmetrical keel, this sometimes winged; lemma 3-nerved, the 2 lateral nerves short and indistinct; ovary lobed at the apex.
A genus of 6 species in Europe and the Mediterranean region; 1 species extending to Pakistan.
