Evergreen trees with flaking bark and resinous wood. Shoots dimorphic. Short shoots bearing fascicles of 2, 3 or 5 acicular leaves. Male cones c. 15 mm long, in dense clusters at base of short shoots, erect. Female cones becoming woody in the second or third year and falling as a whole; scales cuneate, apex thickened, often prolonged, seeds winged. 
About 80 species, N. temperate and N. tropical.  Represented by 5 especies in Pakistan, of which two are cultivated.
