Erect shrub. Leaves scarious, minute. Cladodes green, persistent, parallel veined, oblong to oblong-lanceolate or elliptic. Flowers unisexual, borne on the upper or the lower surfaces of the cladodes. Perianth segments free, the inner 3 narrower. Male flower: anthers 3. Female flower: ovary stipitate, trilocular; ovules 2 in each locule. Berry fleshy, 1 (-2)-seeded.
A genus of about 7 species distributed in Europe and the Mediterranean region to Iran and Caucasus. Represented in Pakistan by one cultivated species.
