Characters same as that of the family. The only other species, S. dalzielii N.E. Brown, in addition to the following, is endemic to W. Africa, and is distinguished by its obovate-elliptic leaves with rounded apices, very short oblong spikes, pink corolla and filaments as long as the anthers.
