Trees or shrubs with dense dark green foliage. Leaves linear, spirally arranged. Male flowers axillary. Seeds ovoid, partly surrounded by a fleshy aril.
7‑8 species distributed in N. temperate regions and South West to Himalayas, Philippines, Celebes & Mexico.
