A. RADCLIFFE-SMITH

A large tree up to 35 m. Bark smooth, pale grey. Wood soft, white. Young shoots, petioles, leaves and inflorescences grayish-tomentose. Petioles 3-10 cm long. Leaf-blades triangular-ovate to ovate-suborbicular, c. 10-20 cm long and wide, acuminate, cordate to truncate at the base, 3-5-nerved from the base, lateral nerves 5-7 pairs, glabrescent. Stipules subulate, 2-3 mm long. Male inflorescences 10-18 cm long, lax-flowered; peduncle 1-2 cm long; bracts 1-2 mm long, deciduous. Male flowers: pedicels 5-10 mm long; buds 3-4 mm diam.; calyx-lobes elliptic, 5-6 x 2-3 mm, concave, subacute, pubescent; stamens 3-6 mm long, filaments 2-5 mm long, anthers emarginate, 1.3 mm long, yellow. Female inflorescences laxly 1-4-flowered, 1-10 cm long; peduncle 2-4 cm long; bracts triangular, 3 mm long, concave, soon deciduous. Female flowers: pedicels 2-10 mm long; sepals oblong-lanceolate, 5 mm long, densely pubescent, green; ovary ellipsoid-subglobose, 2-3 mm diam., tomentose; styles 1-2 cm long. Fruit depressed-globose, 2.5 x 3 cm, tomentose to ± glabrous; reddish-tinged. Seeds 1.4 cm x 8 mm, smooth, black.
