Perennial, dwarf, glabrous, densely branched, rhizomatous herb. Rhizome long, ± thick. Stem erect or ascending, up to 5 cm, rarely 10 cm high. Leaves succulent, 8-31 x 2-11 mm, linear, obtuse-acute, margin revolute, auriculate at the base, petiole 2-5 mm. Ochrea 3-20 mm long, orbicular-tubular, membranous, ciliate or fimbriate. Inflorescence a compact, terminal, ovate, up to 12 mm long, raceme. Flowers 1.5-2.5 mm across, pedicellate, pedicel up to 2.0 mm long. Tepals 5, 1.5-2.25 x 1-2.0 mm, ovate to broadly-ovate, obtuse, entire, unequal. Stamens 8, filaments long, filiform, equal, crimson. Ovary 1.75-2.25 x 1.25-1.5 mm, ovate, trigonous, styles three, very short with capitate stigmas. Nuts 1.9-3.0 x 1.5-1.75 mm, ovate, trigonous, black, shining, glabrous, not exceeding the perianth lobes.

Fl. Per.: July-August.

Type: Tibet, Thomson (W).

Grows between 3000-5000 m in saline soil and sandy areas. It is used as greens; Distribution: Central Asia, China, Afghanistan, Kashmir, up to Nepal and Sikkim.
