Gleditsia macracantha Desf., Hist. Arb. 2: 246. 1813. Parker, For. Fl. Punj. 3rd. ed. 182. 1956.

A large deciduous tree with large tufts of branched thorns on the stem and larger branches. Leaves uni or bipinnate, rachis 10-17.5 cm long. Leaflets about 7-9 pairs, opposite or alternate 2.5-5 cm long, c. 12-18 mm broad, oblong, oblique at the base, denticulate. Inflorescence raceme-like panicle, 10-22.5 cms long. Flower c. 5 mm long. Calyx (with tube) 6-7 mm long, shortly pubescent, 5 lobed, lobes ovate. Petals c. 2.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse, minutely hairy on both surfaces. Stamens 10, filaments dilated and hairy at the base. Ovary rudimentary and hairy in male flowers, hairy on the sutures in bisexual flowers. Pods up to 30 cm long, c. 5 cm wide, flat, cariaceous, more or less sessile. Seeds flat embedded in pulp, c. 5-8 mm long.

Distribution: Native of China, cultivated in gardens of Punjab.
