Stem slender, herbaceous and diffusely branched, rooting below at nodes. Leaves 1.5-2.5 x 1-1.5 cm, ovate-lanceolate acute, base attenuate or rounded; petiole c. 4 mm long, sparsely hairy above, almost glabrous beneath; stipules divided into long bristles. Inflorescence a capitate cyme. Flowers white, pedicel short, glabrous, calyx-teeth persistent, recurved and lanceolate, c. 2.5 mm long, enlarged in fruit. Fruit indehiscent or dehiscing loculicidally, c. 2 x 3 mm or more, broadly globose. Seeds numerous, angular and pitted.
Type: Habitat in Java, Thunberg (UPS).
Distribution: Java, Japan to temperate Himalayas, Bhutan to East Kashmir and Pakistan.
