Malvaviscus arboreus var. arboreus
Hibiscus malvaviscus Linn.
Shrub or vine-like plants. Branches, petioles and pedicels densely velvety pubescent or sometimes almost glabrous. Leaves 3-8 (-11) cm long and broad, rounded to shallowly cordate at base, acute to acuminate at apex, serrate to crenate, ovate-orbicular, densely pubescent. on both sides, glabrescent; stipules 3-5 mm long, filiform; petiole 1-4 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary; pedicel 0.5-3 cm long. Epicalyx segments 6 or more, linear-lanceolate to spathulate, 6-10 mm long, 1.5-2 mm broad, pubescent. Calyx tubular, slightly longer than epicalyx, fused above the middle, teeth linear-lanceolate to lanceolate. Corolla 2-3 cm long, red; petals obovate, retuse. Staminal column exserted, 3-4.5 cm long, glabrous.
Lectotype: Herb. Clifford (BM!).
Distribution: Mexico to Peru and Brazil, occasional in West Indies; cultivated all over the world.
In Pakistan it is occasionally cultivated.
