  • Loranthus lineatus Edgew.

    A glabrous shrub. Leaves sub-sessile, 8-11 cm long, elliptic-ovate to oblanceolate, mostly opposite, obtuse sometimes acute, entire, coriaceous; base attenuate. Flower buds cylindrical, acute; flowers in axillary racemes, 3.5-4 cm long; bract orbiculate, persistent. Calyculus 4 mm long, persistent, glabrous, splitting into 4-5 truncate lobes. Perianth tube 2-2.4 cm long, scarlet, 5-lobed; lobes c. 1 cm long, linear-oblong, greenish. Stamens 5, filaments 6 mm long, glabrous; anthers 5 mm long. Style 3-3.5 cm long; stigma capitate, 1 mm long. Fruit 8-12 mm long, oblong, glabrous; seed 8-9 mm long, oblong.

    Type: Described from S. India, Madras, Pondicheri. Herb. Commerson, (P?).

    Distribution: Sumatra, New-Guinea, Assam, Ceylon, tropical and temperate Himalayas up to 2300 m. alt. s.m.

    The species has been regarded as a synonym of Dendrophthoe falcata (L f.) Etting. The specimens examined from Pakistan are not of the variety, falcata Kurz on which D. falcata is based, so the name of the species has been retained as L. longiflorus Desr.

    A shrub with pretty red flowers, parasitic on Albizzia lebbek Benth. and other trees of the foot-hill zone in W. Pakistan.
