Amaranthus hybridus_subsp._hybridus var. erythrostachys Moq. in DC., Prodr. 13(2): 259. 1849.
Amaranthus chlorostachys convar. erythrostachys (Moq.) AellenAmaranthus cruentus sensu StewartAmaranthus hypochondriacus L.
Inflorescence red.
Type: Cultivated material from Toulouse Botanic Garden (G-DC, holotype) (I.D.C. microfiche 2184 No. 22!). The red colouration of this variety vanishes to a greater or less extent on drying, and only a limited number of specimens bear colour notes. Hence the specimens cited below are cited as subsp. hybridus s.I.
Distribution (of subspecies): Practically throughout the warmer regions of the world as a spontaneous naturalised weed, frequent in the temperate regions as a casual (e.g. as a “wool adventive” in Europe). Grown in many areas as a grain crop, and almost cosmopolitan (including Pakistan) as a decorative, bearing the English name “Prince of Wales’ Feathers”.
