The Linnaean name Poa distans is a later homonym of Poa distans Jacq. Although Linnaeus based his name on a specimen collected by Jacquin there is no evidence to link this specimen with the name Poa distans Jacq. Although the Linnaean epithet is illegitimate in Poa, it is perfectly acceptable in Glyceria and so Glyceria distans is taken as the basionym of Puccinellia distans.
