Annual, stout climber with (2-) 3-fid, puberulous tendrils. Stem slightly pubescent. Leaves orbicular-reniform or broadly ovate, 7-10 cm long, 8-12 cm broad, 5(-7)-lobed, lobes acute or obtuse, denticulate; petiole 2-7 cm long, pubescent. Flowers white, pedicellate; male flowers racemose, peduncles paired, one 1-flowered, the other many flowered; female flowers solitary. Calyx-tube broadened at apex, c. 3 mm across, lobes minute. Petals lanceolate-oblong. Staminal filaments c. 2 mm long. Ovary oblong, style 1.5-1.8 cm long. Fruits ovoid-fusiform, 5-6 cm long, 3.5-4 cm broad, pointed at both ends, white striped when young, yellow when mature. Seeds ovate-oblong, 11-12 x 6-7 mm broad, enclosed within red pulp.

Holotype: Pada valam, p. 39, t. 15 in Rheede, Hort. Ind. Malab. 8 (1688).

Distribution: Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Bangla Desh, Burma, Malaya¬sia, Philippine, Bonin Isles and Northern Australia.
