35. Nepeta sp. Aff. hindostana (Roth) Haines

I.C. Hedge

  • Nepeta hindostana* auctt: Mukerjee

Scarcely differing from Nepeta hindostana in fades, leaves, indumentmn, inflorescence and floral characters but apparently a short-lived perennial and with dearly different nutlets; these are ellipsoid, c. 1.3 x 0.6 mm, pale brown, depressed-tuberculate with a long U-V-shaped areole extending 2/3 the length of the nutlet. As in Nepeta hindostana the nutlets are strongly mucilaginous on wetting.

Distribution: Afghanistan (?), Pakistan, NW India (Punjab).

The specimens cited above had previously, possibly wrongly, been identified as Nepeta hindostana. Here they are provisionally separated as an independent species, but because of the uncertainty about the application of the name Nepeta hindostana a formal description has been deferred. It appears from the material examined that plants with the characteristic U-shaped areoles are restricted to the Indian Punjab and Pakistan; those with the small areoles are mostly further east whence it is more likely that Heyne’s type specimen of Nepeta hindostana originated.
