  • Aquilegia euchroma Rech.f.
  • Aquilegia helmandica Grey-Wilson
  • Aquilegia vulgaris subsp. moorcroftiana var. afghanica Bruehl

Follicles with glandular hairs, sepals and petals. sometimes slightly shorter and often distinctly narrower than in the typical variety.

    Fl. Per.: April-May.

Type locality: Kurram valley, on the slopes of Mt. Sikaram, Aitchison.

    B-6 Chitral: Rosh Gal, 10,000', stony ground, Stainton 2803 (RAW), Lowari-Chitral, 5th mile, M. Qaiser & A. Ghafoor 1830 (KUH).

Distribution: Mainly in the western part of the whole area of the species, but observed as far east as Kashmir.

Aquilegia euchroma Rech.f. is typical Aquilegia moorcroftiana var. afghanica. Aquilegia helmandica Grey-Wilson (l.c.) is said to have hairs on both sides of the leaves, but obviously this character is variable even within one population, as can be seen in collections from Afghanistan. The vegetative parts are very well developed in Aquilegia helmandica, flowers are numerous but their parts comparatively small. I do not think that it can he separated from var. afghanica.
