Resembles ssp. paradoxa in h aving ridged achenes with a projection but differs in the colour of the achenes and shape and colour of the ridges. subsp. costata has dull brown achenes surfaces with blunt and brown ridges, whereas ssp. paradoxa has shiny reddish brown achenes with thin acute and white ridges.
Type: Described from Siberia, 16.7.1961, Sojak s. n. (PR).
