2 (1) Low growing herbs, basal stipules with lanceolate-acuminate auricles, petals 5.0-5.5 mm long, styles thin and sharp at the base.   40 Potentilla sino-nivea
+ Medium tall herbs, basal stipules with oblong to oblong-ovate auricles, petals 7-8 mm long, styles thickened at the base or uniformly thickened.   (3)
       
3 (2) Plants covered with dense pale-yellow glands, stem and petioles tomentose with long spreading hairs, upper surface of leaflets adpressed pilose and green, lower dull white tomentose, styles thickened at the base.   41 Potentilla evestita
