Annuals. Spikelets lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, compressed; lower glume 3-5-nerved; upper glume 5-7-nerved; lemmas with several irregular apical notches below which arise usually 3 awns; lower lemmas often with a single awn, upper lemmas usually with three; lateral awns often weaker than the central and occasionally vestigial, sometimes all 3 awns are equally robust; awns flattened and strongly recurved at maturity. 1 species only.
