Plants small, slender, in mats or tufts. Branches julaceous. Leaves ± crowded, imbricate, strongly concave, sharply pointed to obtuse; margins plane, more or less serrate, proximal portion sometimes spinosely toothed; laminal cells ± papillose abaxially, elliptic-rhomboidal, in basal angles short, quadrate. Seta elongate. Capsule erect to horizontal, symmetric; operculum conic.
Genera 2 (2 in the flora): worldwide except Antarctica.
