Taxon in Process: Sphagnum Species I

Plants light green with a little pinkish tinge in a few branches. Stems green, superficial cortical cells aporose. Stem leaves lingulate, 1.3--1.45 mm; hyaline cells fibrillose in distal 1/2 of leaf and many 2--septate. Branches narrow and tapered, not 5-ranked. Branch fascicles with 2 spreading and 1--2 pendent branches. Branch leaves ovate, ± 1.2 mm, concave, straight, apex involute. Sexual condition unknown. Spores unknown.

Known only from type locality, as a large compact shaded hummock at the edge of an ombrotrophic blanket mire; se Alaska.

Macroscopically this species looks much like a green form of S. capillifolium$ but the stem leaves are quite different microscopically. Further collections are needed for better characterization.
