Culms dilated directly proximal to flower, 0.2--0.5 mm diam. Inflorescences: bracts not subtending inflorescence. Capsules usually not exceeding tepals.
Flowering and fruiting spring--mid summer. Various damp open habitats including vernal depressions, streambeds, swales in sagebrush flats, forest clearing and alpine meadows; 1400--3400 m; Calif., Idaho, Nev., Oreg.
