Annual or perennial herbs. Stems simple or branched. Leaves alternate, dentate or lyrately pinnate. Heads heterogamous, rather small, radiate, numerous or few, in loose corymbs or solitary, terminal, long pedunculate. Involucre subglobose, bracts membranaceous, 1-4 seriate, imbricate. Receptacle convex, alveolate, naked. Ray florets pistillate, 3-5 seriate, corolla short ligulate, white to reddish. Disc florets bisexual or functionally staminate, tubular, 4- or 5-lobed, yellow. Achenes somewhat compressed, oblong-obovoid, short beaked or beakless, with an apical rim, more or less glandular. Pappus absent, but sometimes with a viscid secretion at summit of achene.

About 10 species from southern Europe to India, Malaysia, China and Japan; one variable species in Taiwan.
