Perennial herb; rhizome erect to ascending more or less stout, bearing stems and leaves at apex. Stem up to 22 cm, slender ascending to erect Leaves 0.8-2 cm long, 1.5-4 cm broad,reniform to broadly ovate more or less deeply cordate at base, rounded to obtuse at apex, subcrenate to repand-dentate on the margin, glabrous beneath and hirsute above, subcoriaceous; petioles 0.5-5 cm long, slender. Stipules 2-6 mm long, 1.5-3 mm broad, ovate to oblong, acute at apex, sparsely denticulate to almost entire, glabrous, free. Flowers 1-1.5 cm across yellow with brownish-purple veins; peduncles 1-4 cm long, slender, exceeding leaves. Sepals 5-6 mm long, 1-1.5 mm broad, linear to linear-oblong, acute at apex, glabrous or short ciliate on margin; appendages up to 0.5 mm long, rounded, glabrous. Petals oblong to obovate, basal longest, rounded at apex, laterals beardless; spurs 1-1.5 mm long, equalling or slightly exceeding calycine appendages, cylindrical, obtuse. Styles 1.2-1.5 mm long, slightly geniculate at base, clavate distally, with two lateral lobes fused behind at apex, no stigmatic beak. Capsules 4-6 mm long, ellipsoid, glabrous. Seeds ovoid, c. 2 mm long. Chromosome number: n = 6.

Circumboreal widely distributed in the cooler regions and high mountains of the Northern Hemisphere.
