大武山紫菀

Perennial small herbs, rhizomes elongate. Stems terete, 3-5 cm tall, unbranched or branching in inflorescence, densely hirsute, sparsely leafy. Radical leaves thick, rigid, rosulate, short petiolate 0.3-1 cm long, obovate or oblong, 12-20 mm long, ca. 7 mm wide, apex acute, base attenuate into winged petiole, margins shallowly mucronulate-serrate, nearly subentire, densely hirsute on both surfaces. Median cauline leaves few, spatulate to oblanceolate, apex acute, base attenuate, short petiolate or subsessile, densely hirsute on both surfaces. Heads 1 or 2, ca. 8 mm across, erect, peduncle 2-3 mm long. Involucre hemispheric to bowl-shaped, 3-4 mm tall, 5-7 mm across, bracts in 2 series, herbaceous, purplish, entire, linear-lanceolate, apex acute to attenuate-acute, hispidulous, ciliate, outer bracts shorter, 2.9 mm long, 0.6 mm wide, inner bracts 3.5 mm long, 0.6 mm wide. Ray florets ligules white, in one row. Disc florets yellowish, lobes short. Pappus tawny, 2 mm long. Achenes densely hirsute.

PINGTUNG: Mt. Tawushan, Ohwi s. n. 1933 (TYPE!).

Endemic; known only from the type collection.

As Kitamura (1934) himself suspected when he published this species, it may be an aberrant dwarf or juvenile form of A. morrisonensis.
