  • Lecanorchis japonica var. thalassica (T. P. Lin) S. S. Ying

    Plants to 50 cm tall. Rhizomes ascending, scaly. Stems brownish, dotted with black, terete, 20-40 cm long, remotely few-scaled, scales blackish brown, ovate-deltoid, 3-4 mm long. Racemes 3-5 cm long, subdensely 4-10-flowered; bracts ovate, 2 mm long, acute, persistent; pedicel and ovary slender, 2.5-3.3 cm long, calyculus 1 mm tall, denticulate. Perianth spreading or subspreading, olive green, with yellow edges; dorsal sepal oblanceolate, 20 mm long, 5 mm wide, apex obtuse; lateral sepals falcate-oblanceolate, 20 mm long, 3 mm wide, obtuse, slightly oblique; petals oblanceolate or spatulate, 20 mm long, 6 mm wide near obtuse apex; lip obovate, 16 mm long, 8 mm wide near apex when expanded, canaliculate at lower part and halfway connate with lower part of column forming tube, tube strongly constricted near middle, apical limb more or less expanded and distinctly 3-lobed, lateral lobes semiorbicular, erect, purple outside, shortly villose inside, midlobe nearly orbicular, ca. 5-6 mm across, entire, with several purple bands outside, disc densely barbate on midlobe, hairs yellowish, extending from midlobe into disc between lateral lobes, inner wall of basal tube villose; column 9 mm long, semiterete, dilated top 3.5 mm wide. Capsules black brown, cylindrical, 3-4 cm long.

    Endemic, broadleaved forests in central Taiwan, 1,400-2,000 m.
