Platanthera brevicalcarata Hayata, J. Coll. Sci. Imp. Univ. Tokyo. 30(1): 350. 1911; Liu & Su, Fl. Taiwan 5: 1092. 1978.

短距粉蝶蘭

Plants 10-20 cm tall. Tuberoids stoloniform, 2-6 cm long, 2-5 mm thick, tapering toward apex, with bud producing from near apex. Stem ridged, with one or two large leaves near base and few successively smaller leaves in upper part. Large leaves more or less petiolate, oblong-elliptic, 2-6 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, acute or obtuse at apex, base cuneate. Inflorescence 3-8 cm long, 5-15-flowered; bracts lanceolate, 6-12 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, acute; pedicel and ovary 7-10 mm long. Flowers white; dorsal sepal concave, ovate or nearly orbicular, 2.5-3 mm long, 2-2.4 mm wide, obtuse, 1-nerved, sometimes slightly keeled abaxially; lateral sepals spreading horizontally, obovate-elliptic, slightly oblique, 4-5 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, apex obtuse, narrowed or cuneate at base, often concave at upper part and keeled abaxially; petals loosely connivent with dorsal petal, obliquely ovate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, 1.8 mm wide; lip oblong, 4-5.5 mm long, 2 mm wide, obtuse or rounded at apex, reflexed, spur short cylindrical, 3 mm long, apex rounded, slightly curved forward; column 1.5-2 mm tall; anther cells rather close, nearly parallel, staminodes whitish, nearly globose; pollinia ellipsoid, 1.2 mm long, caudicle ca. 0.6 mm long, viscidium globose or ellipsoid; stigma protruding between anther cells, rostellum convex, roof-shaped.

Japan. Taiwan, coniferous, mixed coniferous and broadleaved forests, 1600-3500 m, throughout. Epecially common under forests of Abies kawakamii.
