    Plants 30-60 cm tall. Rhizomes ascending, J-shaped, rigid, with short scale-like sheaths at nodes, more or less whitish hirsute. Roots radiate from near tip of rhizome, stretching horizontally, to 20 cm long, ca. 1.5 mm in diam. Aerial stems terete, straight, simple or rarely branched, 20-50 cm long, 1.5-2 mm in diam., remotely scaled, scales ovate-lanceolate, 3-7 mm long, embracing stem at base, dry and blackish. Racemes 3-7 cm long, loosely 4-7-flowered; bracts deltoid, 3-5 mm long, acute, glabrous; pedicel and ovary slender, erect or ascending, 2-3 cm long, with calyculus at summit, calyculus ca. 1 mm tall, erose-denticulate. Flowers waxy yellow, brownish yellow, pale brown or sometimes tinged with purple, perianth spreading or subspreading; dorsal sepal linear-oblanceolate, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 3.5-4 mm wide, apex acute, gradually attenuate toward base, 5-nerved; lateral sepals similar to dorsal one, slightly oblique; petals linear-oblanceolate, slightly falcate, 1.5-2.2 cm long, 4-5 mm wide, acute, 5nerved; lip 1.7-2 cm long, canaliculate at lower part and connate with lower half of column from base to ca. 1/3 or 1/2 length, limb more or less spreading, 6-8 mm wide when expanded, 3-lobed, lateral lobes triangular, acute or obtuse, entire or denticulate on front edge, midlobe larger, orbicular or nearly square, erose-lacerate, truncate and slightly emarginate at apex, disc barbate on midlobe and between lateral lobes, hairs multicellular, yellowish or turning purplish toward tips, inner wall around mouth of basal tube shortly hirsute; column white, slender, 10-14 mm long, apex dilated, wing trapezoid, nearly entire; anther 1.5 mm long, 1 mm wide, with dilated disc-like solid top and slightly narrowed base; stigmatic plate slightly protruding, minutely papillose on ventral side. Capsules elongate fusiform or cylindrical, 2-4 cm long.

    Japan. Taiwan, broadleaved forests, 600-1,500 m throughout.
