Plant with short rhizome and rosette of linear, arching leaves 60-80 cm x 3 cm, remnants of dead leaves persist at the base. Scapes 60-70 cm. Flowers 5-6, bright orange, large, sessile, aggregated into a terminal head. V - mid spring to late autumn. Fl - in June, for 2-3 weeks. Fr - August. P - by division and by seed. Flowering the second-third year after sowing. Can grow on poor soil and in partial shade, however does well on moist soil and in a sunny position. Cultivated in St. Petersburg Botanical Garden since 1866. Recommended for group planting. Z 4 (3).
