Herbs, perennial, 30-80 cm tall, gray puberulent or glabrescent; branches 8-14 cm, ascending. Lower and middle stem leaves sessile; leaf blade elliptic, 5-20 × 1-1.5 cm, abaxially densely arachnoid pubescent, adaxially gray-black when dried, sparsely gray pubescent, 3-7-partite; lobes linear, linear-lanceolate, or elliptic-lanceolate, 5-8(-10) × 1-2(-3) mm, basal lobes usually lobulate; lobules elliptic. Uppermost leaves and leaflike bracts linear or linear-lanceolate. Synflorescence a ± narrow panicle. Capitula many. Involucre globose or hemispheric, 2-3 mm in diam. Marginal female florets 5-10; corolla limb puberulent. Disk florets 8-15, male. Achenes oblong or obovoid. Fl. and fr. Jul-Oct.
