Plants 40-60 cm tall, glabrous. Stem erect, branched; branchlets erect or spreading, slender, rigid. Leaves alternate; petiole 5-20 mm; leaf blade pale green abaxially, green adaxially, ovate or elliptic, 3-4 × 2-2.5 cm, rigid, sometimes with 2 basal glands, setose between teeth, lateral veins 4 or 5 pairs, base cuneate, attenuate into petiole, margin crenate-serrulate, apex acute or acuminate, rarely obtuse. Inflorescences many, in upper leaf axils, 2-flowered; peduncles shorter than leaves, 2-2.5 cm. Pedicels short, 0.8-1 cm, elongate at fruiting, bracteate at base; bracts persistent, ovate, very small, apex acuminate. Flowers white, pink, yellow, or blue. Lateral sepals 2, broadly ovate, 4-5 mm, 3-5-veined, base cordate, apex acute or acuminate. Lower sepal broadly funnelform, navicular, limb to 9 mm deep, gradually narrowed into an involute spur longer than limb; mouth vertical. Upper petal orbicular or broadly ovate, 6-7 mm in diam., abaxial midvein thickened, with a small sac or triangular cristate; lateral united petals not clawed, 6-8 mm, 2-lobed; basal lobes broadly orbicular; distal lobes oblong or narrowly dolabriform, longer, apically retuse; auricle narrowly inflexed. Filaments short, broad; anthers obtuse. Ovary fusiform. Capsule linear or narrowly clavate, 1.2-1.4 cm. Seeds few, brown, oblong or elliptic, smooth, shiny. Fl. Jul-Aug, fr. Sep.
