The description of the genus is the same as that of the family.
There are 26 species worldwide, mostly distributed in temperate regions. Two species are recognized in China. Archidium alternifolium (Hedw.) Schimp. was first reported from Fangshan (Mt.), near Nanjing, Jiangsu province, by P.-C. Chen et al. (1963) and later was reported from Jigongshan (Mt.), Henan province, by X.-J. Li and H.-J. Yu (1982). These reports could not be confirmed by the authors.
