Plants small, 3–6(–10) mm high, in dense tufts. Stems very short, erect, simple, rarely branched; central strand present. Leaves often crowded at the stem tips, ovate to oblong-ovate, or elliptic, ligulate, apiculate to shortly awned, rarely rounded-obtuse at the apex; margins plane or slightly incurved, usually entire, sometimes crenulate to serrulate above; costa percurrent to shortly excurrent; in cross section with only dorsal stereid band; upper leaf cells quadrate to hexagonal, pluripapillose on both sides, rarely smooth; basal cells rectangular, smooth. Dioicous or autoicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to stem leaves. Setae elongate or short; capsules ovoid or obovoid, mostly exserted; annuli present or absent; opercula conic-rostrate, shortly apiculate to rostrate, sometimes persistent with columella; peristome teeth absent or rudimentary, or rarely consisting of 16 irregularly 2–3 forked, perforate teeth. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, yellowish brown, papillose.
