Plants slender, usually ca. 1.0 cm high, rarely higher, up to 3.0 cm, yellowish green above, dark green or brownish below, in dense or loose tufts. Stems erect or ascending, often simple, densely leaved, radiculose at base. Leaves 3–4(–7) mm long, lanceolate from a narrowly obovate and clasping base, abruptly narrowed to a narrow and long acumen, subtubulose above, often strongly crispate when dry, widely spreading when moist; margins incurved in the subula, subentire or serrulate in the upper part, bistratose above; costa narrow, percurrent to shortly excurrent; upper cells small, quadrate, thick-walled, smooth, sometimes bistratose; basal cells elongate-rectangular, 30–40 µm × 16–18 µm, pellucid, thin-walled; alar cells not differentiated. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to the upper stem leaves, with a larger sheathing base. Setae terminal, elongate, straight, 4–5(–10) mm long, brownish; capsules short-cylindric, suberect to slightly inclined, asymmetric, brownish; annuli none; peristome teeth lanceolate, reddish orange below, orange-yellow above, divided halfway down, vertically striate near the base. Calyptrae ca. 2 mm long, smooth at base. Spores 12–15 µm in diameter.

Type. Japan.

Chinese specimens examined: ANHUI: Huang Shan (Mt.), P.-C. Chen 6776 (IFSBH, PE), 7488 (IFSBH, MO, PE). FUJIAN: Wuyi Shan (Mt.), P.-C. Chen 754 (IFSBH, PE). XIZANG: Lang-xian Co., M. Zang 788 (IFSBH, KUN).

Habitat: on rocks in forests; Distribution: China, Korea, Japan, and Russian Far East.
